For Elizabeth Presta, no matter what level of planning and preparation she did for her pregnancy and birth, her plans still derailed and she still was left feeling emotionally empty. That picture of becoming a mom was not at all what she expected and she instantly started to question and judge herself.
We have a lot of assumptions about our pregnancy, birth, postpartum and life in general as a mother. We paint a picture in our minds, but what if it looks like a VERY different picture than the one we dreamt?
Is there anything we can do to manage our expectations and what if it does feel different, how do we pivot?
Learn how to… manage our expectations and know that our plans might not go as planned in this episode of the Mamas in Training Podcast.
3 STEPS TO MANAGING EXPECTATIONS:
The first step to managing our expectations postpartum comes with creating a postpartum plan. EVEN if life doesn’t follow the plan, we will at least have support in place and be able to pivot instead of floundering.
Once we have that plan in place, the next step is to find a therapist and a support community. Knowing that you have the support and places to reach out and get the comfort and validation that you need is essential.
Finally, we must allow time. This is the hardest step and for Elizabeth, her postpartum experience shocked her, but with time, she started to feel change for the better. Know after hearing Elizabeth’s story that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, even though it can seem extremely dark in postpartum.
