What is preeclampsia? It is one of the most common pregnancy complications. However, if diagnosed, it doesn't mean that there will be a severe case and can be treated very simply, but if it goes undetected, it could be fatal. So what are the symptoms, who is at risk? And what do we need to know if we get the diagnosis?
Dr. Nicole Rankins is a board certified, practicing OBGYN and a mom of two who has dealt with many cases of preeclampsia over the last 15 years. She's helped more than 1000 babies come into this world and she is here to share with us what we need to know to stay healthy.
Learn what to look out for during pregnancy, so we can catch preeclampsia before it becomes severe in this episode of the Mamas in Training Podcast.
HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF AGAINST PREECLAMPSIA
We are always talking about advocating for ourselves, but how do we actually do that and why do we have to? A diagnosis of preeclampsia can often go undetected, untreated or even brushed off, unfortunately. It is our responsibility as expecting parents to look out for our own body, trust if it’s not “feeling right” to speak up in a respectful and vulnerable way, so our providers actually hear us. Preeclampsia can happen to all women for a variety of reasons, however, there are certain women who need to be more aware and speak up for what they need.
The US medical system, especially the OBGYN system, tends to have a patriarchal approach to birth and certain marginalized communities. Black women especially, have additional burdens that they need to be aware of and must be ready to speak up for themselves or have support like a family member or doula to additionally support them. No matter the status, black women even like Serena Williams, haven’t been heard and she has the financial freedom that many black women don’t have, so it’s essential that expecting parents know how and when to advocate for themselves and their future baby.
Dr. Nicole Calloway Rankins is a board-certified, practicing OB/GYN and mom of 2 who empowers first time moms to feel calm, confident, and empowered for pregnancy and birth.
