If you have to have a C-section, are you prepared? …EVEN if you plan to have a natural birth? April is Cesarean Awareness Month, so it’s the perfect time to share a topic that is never discussed enough! Many of you have had a c-section (not by choice) and then find yourself saying… WHY didn’t I learn about what that experience would be like beforehand.
Dr. George Mussalli from Village Obstetrics in Manhattan, has delivered an estimated 3,000 births by cesarean and is here to fill us in on all the details of what to expect during a C-section. This knowledge will give you comfort in knowing that if your journey takes an unexpected turn, you will still be prepared. He also talks about a new approach called The Gentle (or Jentle) C-section.
Learn what a Gentle C-section looks like and how you can have one, if necessary in this episode of the Mamas in Training Podcast.
Recovery from a C-section is either easy or very difficult, depending on the mama. However, in both cases, you must take it slow. Dr. Mussalli shares some tips for recovery post cesarean such as:
- Using a belly binder
- Taking IBuprofen 600-800mg every 6 hrs for pain instead of narcotics
- Focusing on taking deep breaths often
- Staring movement and slow walking as soon as you're able to prevent blood clots
Dr. George Mussalli has extensive experience in both hands-on daily care and administrative medicine. He is the former Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village. Prior to St. Vincent’s, he served as Chief of Obstetrics at North Central Bronx Hospital/Jacobi Medical Center. In the Bronx he oversaw the pregnancy of thousands of women in a community with overwhelming rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and preterm birth. Dr. Mussalli did his subspecialty training at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and is board certified in maternal-fetal medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A father of four, Dr. Mussalli understands the joys and heartaches of parenthood from both sides of the white coat..
